According a legend of the 16th century, a cross was retrieved from the sea by fishermen from Blankenberge. It was the cross of the church of the old Wenduine that was destroyed by a flood wave during a heavy autumn storm.
It has been told that already in 1609 the Holy Cross was carried in a procession and that in 1774 an altar was set up on the beach.
According this ancient tradition the cross is carried by fishermen from Blankenberge.
Until 2007, the legend is re-enacted on the beach: the cross is brought onto land with an old Blankenberge ,,Scute'', a traditional wooden flat bottom fishing boat and carried to the church in triumph. A spectacle in which dance, music and poetry alternates with folklore and pious folk devotion. In 2008, the procession, dance and other performances went through on the Rotonde.
